Field Engineering Technician III

ICON is looking to add a Field Engineering Technician III to our Field Engineering team. As a Field Engineering Technician, you will independently commission, troubleshoot, and maintain ICON’s 3D printers and related systems safely, efficiently, and compliantly. They work with a high degree of autonomy on complex tasks, anticipating issues and mitigating risks while ensuring consistent operations. This role requires advanced mechanical and electrical knowledge, including proficiency in PLCs, VFDs, cabling, and troubleshooting. Field Engineering Technician's contribute as informal leaders, supporting team development by mentoring Field Engineering Technician I-level employees and guiding others in decision-making. They demonstrate strong communication and documentation practices, ensuring clear shift handoffs, accurate troubleshooting records, and operational alignment across teams. They consistently exhibit initiative, ownership, and operational discipline, enabling ICON to deliver reliable, groundbreaking technology in the field. This role is based in Miami, FL, and will require travel outside of the area for extended durations. This position reports to the Field Engineering Technician Lead.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Commission, troubleshoot, and maintain ICON’s 3D printers and related systems with minimal supervision.
- Connect and disconnect electrical, pneumatic, and network cabling to facilitate printer mobility.
- Independently resolve electrical, mechanical, and software issues, leveraging advanced troubleshooting skills.
- Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, and monitoring of printer performance to reduce downtime.
- Regularly analyze printer data to foresee potential issues and proactively address them.
- Lead the coordination of complex tasks while ensuring team safety, operational efficiency, and compliance.
- Document troubleshooting steps, repairs, replacements, and shift handoffs in ICON’s ticketing system.
- Build strong working relationships with Print Operators and other cross-functional teams to ensure smooth project execution.
- Train and mentor Field Engineering Technician I employees, contributing to their skill development and overall team effectiveness.
- Follow SOPs, workflows, and team instructions with a disciplined, process-oriented approach.
- Willingness to travel outside of Miami, FL, for multiple weeks at a time.
- Flexible availability to work nights and weekends as needed.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- 4+ years as a Field Engineering Technician I or equivalent experience in a technical, hands-on role.
- Ability to read wiring diagrams and terminate cables (e.g., camlock power, EtherCAT).
- Strong troubleshooting skills across electrical, mechanical, and control systems.
- Advanced knowledge of PLCs, VFDs, cabling, and related printer systems (preferred).
- Works independently on complex tasks; anticipates issues and mitigates risks.
- Strong communication and documentation skills.
- Takes ownership of decisions in local operations; can guide and mentor peers when needed.
- Willingness to travel outside of Miami, FL, including extended stays and on-call, nights, and weekends.
- Proficiency in English, spoken and written
- OSHA 10, CPR, and heavy equipment certifications.
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS
- Advanced proficiency with PLCs, VFDs, and electrical troubleshooting, including equipment replacement and manual controls.
- Experience in remote device operation and system navigation.
- Proficiency in welding (various types).
- Experience contributing feedback to refine best practices and improve team workflows.
PHYSICAL / ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds safely and regularly.
- Comfortable working in various outdoor environments, including extreme temperatures (above 100°F or below freezing), sun, rain, mud, and areas with limited infrastructure (e.g., lack of electricity).
- Comfortable standing and moving on your feet for the majority of the workday as well as climbing ladders and carrying material buckets.
